The story behind HDR HERO
Why I built my own HDR software.
My name is Toni Steurer and I work at a respected real-estate agency in southern Baden-Württemberg. Our high-quality property photos used to come from a professional photo agency — until it was taken over and could no longer provide its service to us.
When my boss asked me back then whether I would take on this task, I was sceptical at first. But after intensive training from our previous photographer and plenty of practice, I soon realised I had a talent for real-estate photography: capturing houses and apartments so they sell — inviting, bright and full of life.

But capturing real estate perfectly on camera is only half the battle. Anyone who photographs real estate professionally knows the following, recurring problem: the blown-out window on one side and the dark room on the other — and the viewer who would like to see both in balanced quality.
The answer is HDR merging: several brightness levels combined into a single, perfectly lit image. Only that merging takes time and skills I simply didn't have alongside the shoots.
So I handed that step off to someone else.

A service provider took over the HDR merging for a hefty fee — and for a while it worked. But over time reliability slipped: sometimes the images arrived late or incomplete, sometimes not in the quality we as a brokerage had hoped for. And every time I had to rework a result or wait for a delayed delivery, the same thought kept coming back to me:
“There has to be a better way.”
Just do it yourself.
Around that time I had begun diving deep into building web applications — with modern coding tools that suddenly made so much possible. At some point the question inevitably came up: why don't I just build myself an automated HDR merging tool?
So I did. At first it was just a small, raw processing pipeline. Functional, and meant for me alone. I compared, adjusted, discarded and improved, image by image, until the results weren't merely good but better than anything I had seen before.
No more waiting, no compromises.
For quite a while I used this tool exclusively for myself, locally on my machine. And I was happy with it: consistent quality, a consistent look, no waiting for days and, above all, far cheaper. At last my images were ready exactly when I needed them — and in the quality I wanted.
From a personal tool to a HERO.
Over time the pipeline grew. I kept developing it, built a database and wired a storage system behind it, until the local helper became a full web application. One I no longer wanted to use just for myself, but to put into the hands of every photographer who knows the same problem I once did.
That's how HDR HERO came to be.
Built for real-estate photography
HDR HERO wasn't designed on a drawing board. It grew out of real-world experience — and out of the conviction that professional HDR results should be available fast, affordably and without detours.
